“What is one to say about June, the time of perfect young summer, the fulfillment of the promise of the earlier months, and with as yet no sign to remind one that its fresh young beauty will ever fade.”
~ Gertrude Jekyll (British horticulturalist and author; 1843-1932)

On Children in Gardens

“Even if she forgets the whole thing in her teens, later still, when she is grown up and has a first garden of her own, some misty memory of the pleasure of growing things will give her a head start over the gardener without any background, just as children who have spoken a second language, and forgotten it, can pick it up again in later years.”
~ Anne Scott-James (British journalist and author of gardening books; 1913-2009)

Garden Stairs

Halfway up the stairs
Isn’t up and isn’t down.
It isn’t in the nursery,
It isn’t in the town.
And all sorts of funny thoughts
Run around my head:
“It isn’t really anywhere!
It’s somewhere else instead!”
~ A. A. Milne (British author and father of Christopher Robin Milne; 1882-1956)

Inspired by Nature

A childhood spent playing in virgin forests and swift rivers on the tropical island in Mindoro, Philippines, inspires James Hanselman to restore natural beauty to every garden with which he interacts. For example, James is able to photograph water flowing over boulders in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and re-create the idea in a backyard swimming pool remodel in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. What natural beauty are you longing to see restored in your backyard? Give us a call at 717-366-6785. Creating a legacy of beauty for our clients is our joy and reward!

Living Memorials

” Trees are the best monuments that a man can erect to his own memory. They speak his praises without flattery, and they are blessings to children yet unborn.”
~ attributed to Lord Orrery (likely John Boyle, 5th Earl of Orrery and Cork, writer and friend of Swift, Pope, and Johnson; 1707-1762)

Every day, take time . . .

Every day, take time . . .
to still your soul, savor the beauty, and say thank You!

This hunt for joy–in relationships, in our garden, in the world–has become a daily practice that nourishes my spirit and enriches my life. A gratitude journal and my phone camera are the best ways for me to record and remember these everyday grace gifts. How about you?

Garden Time

“Garden time is time that involves itself in the moment, that passes each moment fully alive, that focuses on the soaring stateliness of trees and the minute scale of the tiniest blossom and insect. I go to my garden to discover that kind of time. And I have to take time out
. . . to discover it.”
~ Emilie Barnes (Gardener and author of Time Began in a Garden)

The day before April

“The day before April
Alone, alone,
I walked in the woods
And sat on a stone.

I sat on a broad stone
And sang to the birds.
The tune was God’s making
But I made the words.”

–Mary Carolyn Davies

Well-planted boulders add structure and beauty to a garden; they can also serve practical purposes as splash pads for water features, seats for contemplation, tables for eating, and natural playground equipment for climbing and exploration. Can we plant some rocks in your garden?
